Aimé-Jules Dalou, 1838 Paris – 1902

"AIMÉ" ("LA VÉRITÉ MÉCONNUE") Height: 20 cm. Width: 13 cm. Depth: 9 cm. Cast signature "DALOU" on the base in the shape of a rock on the front long side. Stamped numbering "59808" and "5" on the lower edge. Bronze, brown patina. Nude figure of a desperate lover with her hands above her tilted back head. The work is also known under the title "La Vérité méconnue". Early cast, possibly before the editions by Susse Frères, which were cast smaller (height: 14.5 cm). Dalou was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Francisque Joseph Duret. He made his debut at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1862. Accused of involvement in the Paris Commune uprising, he fled to England, where he found great recognition. Back in Paris, he was awarded the Salon Medal of Honor in 1883.
