François Pompon, 1855 Saulieu – 1933 Paris

COQ DORMANT Height: 21 cm. Width: 31 cm. Signed on the turf plinth and foundry mark "Cire Perdue A.A. Hebrard.". Cast from 1925. Bronze, dark brown patina. Bronze sculpture of a cockerel with sleepily closed eyes. The sculptor was initially a stonemason, but continued his education at the art academy and went to Paris, where he met the sculptor Pierre-Louis Rouillard. He attracted attention at the Paris Salon with his small-scale sculptures and was taken in by Auguste Rodin, whose workshop he managed for three years. His breakthrough came at the age of 67 with animal sculptures in the Art Deco style. Admitted to the Legion of Honor, he now also achieved general renown. He exhibited his work "Coq Dormant" at the Salon in 1914. Until 1933, he was represented by the Hébrard Gallery, the important modernist editor. His works can be found in the Metropolitan Museum as well as in the Luxembourg Museum and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The François Pompon Museum was opened in the city of his birth. A.R.
