Georges d‘Espagnat, 1870 Paris – 1950 ebenda

PORTRAIT OF ANDRÉE D'ESPAGNAT Oil on canvas. 65 x 55 cm. Monogrammed "GdE" upper left. In carved frame. Half-length portrait against a greenish-bluish background of a woman sitting on a chair in a white and pink dress, with her brown and red hair pinned up and tied with a light blue ribbon. Her cheeks are flushed and she is looking directly at the viewer, somewhat curiously. Painting with predominantly rapid, mostly broad, impasto brushstrokes, typical of the artist's time. Georges d'Espagnat was a Post-Impressionist painter known for his nudes, still lifes and landscapes. In the tradition of his mentor Pierre-Auguste Renoir, d'Espagnat believed that his paintings should be based on the formal and balanced compositions of the tradition and at the same time take nature as a model. He exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1891 and was good friends with Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard. In the course of his career, the artist also illustrated books by the authors Alphonse Daudet and Remy de Gourmont. (1401482) (19)
