Description

Christian Rohlfs, 1849 Groß Niendorf – 1938 Hagen KORNFELD Oil on canvas. 60 x 100.5 cm. Signed "C Rohlfs 7" lower right. In wide, partially gilded frame. Close-up view without blue horizon of a harvested cornfield with the haystacks staggered from left foreground to right in the radiant sunlight, further adjacent fields in the background on the left, probably with different types of vegetables. Expressionist painting with strong colors, executed with broad vertical brushstrokes in the foreground and horizontal impasto brushstrokes in the background. Masterful work with brilliant use of light. The artist studied in Weimar, from 1895 he worked in Berlin and from 1901 in Hagen/North Rhine-Westphalia. After the Nazis seized power, Rohlfs was expelled from the Prussian Academy, 412 of his paintings were removed and defamed as degenerate. He is considered one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin. Pietro del Vecchio, Leipzig. W. Colsman, Göttingen, 1949. Anonymous sale, Karl & Faber, Munich, October 18-19, 1966, lot 1038. Gallery Utermann, Dortmund, 1972. Anonymous sale, Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, December 5, 1975, lot 648. From around 1910 he can be classified as an Expressionist, and in that year he was elected a jury member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund in Darmstadt. From 1910 to 1912, he spent time in Munich and the surrounding area at the invitation of a patron. In 1930, he met Helmuth Macke and Marianne von Werefkin in Ascona, with whom he worked closely until spring 1931. The most extensive collection of his works, around 700 pieces, can be found today in the Osthaus Museum Hagen. Literature: Paul Vogt, Christian Rohfl's.
