BAIGNEUSES DANS LE BASSIN DU LINKIN, 1898 Oil on card, mounted on parquet wood panel. 29.3 x 43.7 cm. Signed "MAUD" lower right. In silver-plated modern frame. Enclosed a certificate of authenticity by Claire Denis, dated April 10, 2018, in copy. The painting will be included in the forthcoming catalog raisonné under the number 898.0051. Le Linkin, originally a so-called basin de chasse for hunting waterfowl, is a body of water separated from the sea by locks and walls at the harbor of the Breton fishing village of Perros-Guirec. Even at low tide, there is enough water in the Linkin to offer boats a wet berth and holidaymakers a safe place to swim. Denis and Marthe Meurier first visited Perros-Guirec on their honeymoon in 1893 and, after several more family vacations, bought Villa Silencio there in 1908. In terms of color, the present painting formally displays the modernity of the early Nabi period, but thematically it stands at the beginning of the neoclassical paintings with bathers on the beach. Provenance: Dr. Edouard Troester, Geneva. By inheritance in private collection, Lausanne.
