Pierre Eugène Montezin, 1874 Paris – 1946 Moëlan-sur-Mer

French Post-Impressionist, influenced by Claude Monet (1840-1926).PENICHESBEI SAINT-MAMMES Oil on paper, on canvas. 100 x 120 cm. Signed and dated "1937" lower right. In magnificent gilt frame. This large-format painting depicts an everyday scene from Saint-Mammes in the Département of Saine-et-Marne. Several ships, the so-called peniches, common cargo barges used for inland navigation in France, are moored on a small canal that flows into the river. However, the main focus is on the steep embankment leading to the higher bank, where figures on horseback can be seen, as well as dogs and a small store. The steep embankment is bathed in glaring sunlight, so that the vegetation stands out in all shades from green to bright yellow and the water on the left edge of the picture is in shadow and reflected in light violet to dark green tones. In terms of style, theme and execution, all of this corresponds to the Post-Impressionism to which Montezin belonged and still shows a certain influence of the painting of Claude Monet (1840-1926), but here already further developed and with clear echoes of more modern painting of the time. Montezin also worked with the light brown tonality of the paper in many places in his design of the painting, which repeatedly flashes out in the embankment and in the building beneath the painting and thus lends the picture depth.
