LE REPOS DE LA FAMILLE PAYSANNE Black pen on cream-colored paper. 31.2 x 23.2 cm. Inscribed "f.Boucher" in pen lower left. Fully glued to old sleeve paper. We would like to thank Mrs. Françoise Joulie and Mr. Alastair Laing for authenticating this drawing from a photograph. The painter was one of the most important artists of the French Rococo period and was court painter to Louis XV, supported by the Marquise de Pompadour. In 1720 he studied under François le Moyne (1688-1737), and in 1723 he received a first prize from the Académie Royale as well as the Grand Prix de Rome, which enabled him to travel to Italy to study. From 1755 he also worked as artistic director of the Manufacture Royale des Tapisseries and by 1765 he was already the king's first court painter and in 1761 rector of the Royal Academy.
