Description

Johann Christian Brand, 1722 Wien – 1795 ebenda pair of paintingsSOUTHERN LANDSCAPES WITH HERDERS AND FIGURES AT A FOUNTAIN Oil on wood. One parquetted. Each 51 x 71 cm. One signed and dated "JC Brand 1787" lower center and inscribed on well as "Gessners Idylle T:V5.40". In decorative frames. One painting shows a young woman standing in front of a stone sarcophagus on which the words "Hier ruht die As... des Mijcons..." can be read. A small dog is drinking water from a small round basin. To the left, a young man is seated and another man is standing, using a stick to push aside the branches and flowers growing above the inscription. The view to the left is of a wide landscape in which a small round temple stands on a high mountain under a light blue sky. The other painting shows a young family with two children and a dog on an open veranda overgrown with foliage and vines, while the view to the right is of a wide landscape with a shepherd on horseback driving his animals forward. In the foreground on the right are still-life scenes of hunted birds, pottery and various vegetables. Painting with many details in the typical manner of the famous artist. The inscription Gessner's Idyll on the fountain probably refers to the Swiss painter and idyllic poet Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), whose idyllic pastoral poetry is inspired by antiquity. Annotation: The two paintings are probably academy works from the artist's French period, when he was working for Laxenburg Palace. (14008963) (18) Johann Christian Brand, 1722 Vienna- 1795 ibid. Pair of paintings SOUTHERN LANDSCAPES WITH SHEPHERDS AND FIGURES BY A WELL Oil on panel. One panel parquetted. 51 x 71 cm each. One signed and dated "JC Brand 1787" at lower center and described as "Gessners Idylle T:V5.40" on well.
