KAIN AND ABEL Oil on canvas. 48 x 64 cm. The biblical legend is dramatically presented here - on a steep slope in a rocky landscape. The fratricide Cain looks up in horror at God, who appears in the light, surrounded by threatening clouds, while Abel lies on the ground. Dietrich's work shows examples from all areas of painting of his time, encouraged by his travels to Italy and his interest in Old Dutch painting. Highly esteemed by Winckelmann, his paintings attracted interest throughout Europe. According to research by Dr. Alexander Rauch, the painting is a rediscovered work by Dietrich. The long-lost painting was published as early as 1761 by the engraver Jean Daullé (1703-1763) in an engraving entitled "Cain et Abel". "Peint par Dietricy, Peintre de la Cour de Saxe" in the lower margin of the inverted engraving and "Grave par J. Daullé, Graveur du Roy 1761" on the right. - "A Paris chez Daullé Graveur du Roy, Quai des Augustins.". According to the inscription, Dietrich's painting was owned by the German painter Johann Anton de Peters (1725-1795), court painter to Prince Charles de Lorraine, Governor of the Netherlands, who was active in Paris at the time. Again after the engraving by Daullé, a further, almost identical depiction was created as a color lithograph - therefore now on the correct page - in the Bible edition by Joseph Franz von Allioli, there with the note "After an original by Dietrich". God in the Clouds, however - in addition to other alterations - very differently redesigned. The painting in the high masterly quality to be expected for Dietrich and in impeccable condition. A.R.
