PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG NOBLEWOMAN Oil on canvas. 117 x 82 cm. In a magnificent, open-worked gilded frame. Half-length portrait of a young lady against a neutral background. She is leaning with her forearms on a cushion resting on a console and holding a rose in front of her chest. She is dressed in a light blue embroidered silk dress over a white undergarment decorated with rich lace. Her pinned-up hair is held in place by a flower and is lightly powdered. Apart from a brooch on her sleeve, she wears no jewelry. She therefore appears to be a fairly young lady, whose portrait may have been an engagement gift to a future husband, which could also be indicated by the rose as the flower of love. The large, representative format and the magnificent frame indicate the young lady's high origins.
