Anton Graff, 1736 Winterthur – 1813 Dresden, zugeschrieben

PORTRAIT OF LEOPOLD II (1747-1792) Oil on canvas. Doubled. 63 x 42.5 cm. In gilded magnificent frame. The full-length portrait of the Archduke of Austria from the House of Habsburg-Lorraine in a light gala uniform richly decorated with gold and a white-grey allonge wig in an interior with a turquoise-green curtain hanging gathered to one side. He has a fine young face and his eyes are looking directly out of the picture. He is leaning with his left forearm against the stone sculpture of Mars standing on a pedestal, holding a sword in his hand and with his foot resting on his discarded helmet. This could indicate a peace-loving archduke, who was also Grand Duke of Tuscany and, from 1790-1792, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and King of Bohemia, Croatia and Hungary. Representative depiction in a high-quality painting style. (1401272) (18) Provenance: Collection Mona von Bismarck, Florence, until the 1970s.
