Description

Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, 1762 Palmanova – 1844 Mailand

VIEW OF THE PIAZZETTA WITH THE DOGE'S PALACE, CAMPANILE AND MARBLE COLUMN Oil on canvas. 63.5 x 80.5 cm. Accompanied by an expertise by Fabrizio Magani, copy. The view is taken from the canal side. The two-dimensional façade of the Doge's Palace appears powerfully positioned in the picture, with St. Mark's Church and the bell tower next to it in the background. The campanile and column are cleverly positioned here as a compositional counterweight. The presentation of the façade of the palace is remarkable, whereby the columned arcades, the grid decoration and the squaring of the upper storey are rendered with rare accuracy and precision. It is striking that Bison attaches particular importance to his staffage figures. The interactions are well thought out, the groups and individual figures are recognizably conceived in their actions and often relate to one another. The picture on the right shows musicians next to noblemen, in the foreground a lemonade sales table, on the left a Commedia dell'Arte performance with a woman on high stilts. Another theater group has set up its high stage in front of the shaded façade of the Biblioteca. Together with the tower, column and the typical Venetian hustle and bustle, Bison has to a certain extent created the epitome of a Venice memory here. The artist was an Italian classicist painter who studied in Brescia and focused on the work of Girolamo Romanino (1484/87-1562). He later moved to Venice and continued his art studies under Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768). From 1834 to 1838, he undertook a series of journeys that took him to Florence, Rome, Naples and Paestum, among other places. With his Venice vedute, Bison established a commercial genre to meet the demand of tourists and collectors. In addition to numerous views of Venice, he also created idyllic fantasy landscapes. The diversity of his subjects and the high quality of his pictorial production should be emphasized. In the last decade of the 18th century, he worked with the architect Gian Antonio Selva, for example on the decorations of the now defunct Palazzo Bottoni di Ferrara and the Casino Soderini in Treviso. He studied works by Guardi and Gian Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804), also worked as a fresco artist in Venice, moved to Treviso, Padua and Trieste, and finally to Milan in 1833, where he remained until the end of his life.
