Description

Pietro Antonio Domenichini, 1699 – 1743

LANDSCAPE WITH CAPRICCIO OF RUINS AND STAFFAGE FIGURES Oil on canvas. Doubled. 61 x 93 cm. In gilded and relief-decorated frame. We would like to thank Dario Succi for kind information regarding the attribution. The view here leads into an Italian landscape that stretches towards a mountainous horizon on the left of the picture. The right-hand side of the picture shows temple columns, arches and a sarcophagus on a high plinth set in relief. Further back on the left, houses are grouped along the riverbank. A slender tree towers between the two pictorial zones, almost separating them, its crown set against bright clouds. The lighting from the right from the low position of the sun conveys a mood of early Romanticism. The figures walking between the ruins also correspond to this. The painter suggested by Prof. Succi was active until 1743 and is generally referred to as the "Master of Correr Landscapes", as he is represented in this museum. Pietro Antonio Domenichini worked together with Apollonio Facchinetti, known as Domenichini (active 1740-1770), and his brother Iseppo (1717-after 1761). In any case, the stylistic connection with works by Michele Marieschi (1696/1710-1743) is obvious. We owe the reference to the painter to Prof. Succi, who considers the painting to be a work by the aforementioned artist. Literature: Cf. Dario Succi, Michele Marieschi, Treviso 2016, pp. 60-89.
