Venezianischer Maler der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts

CHRIST AND THE CENTURION Oil on canvas. Doubled. 100 x 124 cm. In gilded frame with ornamental relief. Accompanied by an expertise by Prof. Roberto Longhi, in copy, attributing the painting to Sebastiano Ricci. Christ had just delivered his Sermon on the Mount when some Jewish elders sent by a centurion, a Roman officer, came to him (Mt 8:5 - 13, Lk 7:1-10). He had a seriously ill slave and since he was well-disposed towards the Jews and had already built a synagogue for them (Lk 7:4,5), the elders followed his request. Friends of the officer will now convey the salvific words of Christ, which will heal the slave. The transmission of these words is depicted here. Christ, surrounded by a light nimbus, stands in front of an architectural staffage, the centurion's friends on the left half of the picture. The scene is reminiscent of the painting by Paolo Veronese in the Prado of 1571, which depicts the scene in reverse in a different view. Accompanied by an expert's report by Professor Roberto Longhi, in copy, attributing the painting to Sebastiano Ricci.
