The silhouette of the shore, discreetly captured on the horizon with its buildings blurring in the haze, presumably represents a real city - perhaps that of the client. One painting shows a quay wall with a pavilion and fish traps; a three-master, presumably of the VOC, fires a salute, thus emphasizing the international trading character of the Netherlands.
