Johannes Lingelbach, 1622 Frankfurt am Main – 1674 Amsterdam, zugeschrieben

THE HUNTING EXCURSIONISTS Oil on wood. 48.5 x 63.5 cm. With old collection labels verso, once numbered 5067. In ebonized frame with wavy strip decoration. Johannes Lingelbach was twelve years old when he moved from Germany to Amsterdam. In 1644 he went to Rome, where he stayed for five years and, following the example of Pieter van Laer, discovered the Bamboccianti style for himself. The Bamboccianti mainly depicted scenes of everyday life, especially of the common people. Lingelbach returned to Holland for good in 1650. He was an excellent landscape painter, but his work also included genre scenes, seascapes and harbor scenes. This particularly beautiful painting probably belongs to Lingelbach's late creative years: the Italian echoes that were otherwise so noticeable in his works are only faint here, whereas the typical characteristics of Dutch landscape painting - such as the expansive, only slightly hilly land in the background, the horses and riders (very much in the style of Philips Wouwerman) in the foreground and the sky with its heavy clouds, which lack the light blue of the Italian paintings - are very much present. In brown-green tonality, the depiction of several figures, some dressed in fine fabrics, with saddled horses and hunting dogs in front of architectural staffage. The work offered here can be compared with a painting by Johannes Lingelbach, which is somewhat smaller at 36 x 42.5 cm and is kept in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, in terms of the depiction of the figures and animals and their integration into the landscape, particularly with regard to the hunting horn player.
