Description

Franz Werner von Tamm, 1658 Hamburg – 1724 Wien, zugeschrieben

FRUIT STILL LIFE WITH PARROT Oil on canvas. Doubled. 57.5 x 75 cm. In ornamental relief frame. Fruit still life loosely draped and theatrically illuminated against a dark background with a broken pomegranate, figs, a cut melon in the background, large vine leaves and the brightly illuminated grapes with elongated grape berries in the center. In the foreground at the edge of the picture, white blossoms next to a shimmering plum. An African parrot with dark gray plumage and red tail feathers sits on the grape branch on the right. Its head is depicted with a closed beak and excitedly open eyes. Despite the use of tonal and partly earthy hues, the striking luminosity is due to the skillful, artistic distribution of the colour contrasts and the applied lights, which give the objects a stronger plasticity against the dark background. The objects are depicted oversized - in comparison to the natural size of the fruit varieties - which indicates a deliberate long-distance effect of the picture.
