ROBBERY OF THE SABINES Oil on canvas. Doubled. 112 x 162 cm. Unframed. It is a well-known myth that the Romans made up for their lack of women by stealing brides from the neighboring Sabines after founding the city. A peaceful fraternization of the two peoples was supposedly the happy result of negotiations between the two leaders Romulus and Titus Tatius. The memory of this origin of Rome was still documented a millennium later, especially in the Baroque period in pictorial works, whereby it was not the violence of arms but the lustful covetousness that became the theme. This is also expressed here in this painting. The tactical reason for the abduction was a feast. The historical legend has produced important works in all areas of art, both in Italy and, as in this painting, in Flamenco, especially the sculptures by Giovanni da Bologna. (1401653) (13)
