Description

Egbert van Heemskerck d. Ä., 1634 Haarlem – 1704 London

THE DANCE OF THE PEASANT WOMAN Oil on canvas. Doubled. 81.5 x 107 cm. In Louis XV style frame. We would like to thank Dr. Fred G. Meijer for kind information, who attributes the figures to Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder, but the landscape to another hand. A slightly hilly landscape with mottled accentuated farmhouses and a church shows a scene typical of Heemskerck: in front of a rural building a few staffage trees with figures below, drinking and playing music. A tall tree and a dancing peasant woman, rendered in luminous brightness, flank the vertical center of the painting. Although the present painting is not signed, it can be attributed to Egbert Heemskerck the Elder on the basis of several comparative paintings.
