Louis de Caullery, um 1580 Cambrai – um 1621 Antwerpen, und Werkstatt

CROSS Oil on wood. Parquetry. 56.5 x 94 cm. In partially gilded, ebonized frame. In a particularly wide format, Mount Golgotha, characterized above all by the three standing crosses. Behind it a chain of hills looms. The richly colored staffage of figures can be found in variations on Caullery's paintings with the same theme. A comparable scene with Golgotha, which is thought to have been painted around 1617, is kept in the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum in Aachen under inv. no. GK 760. Another comparable painting, in which the composition of the figurative program also corresponds to the painting offered here, is recorded in the RKD under the number 11315. The artist studied under Joos de Momper the Younger (1564-1635) in 1593/94 under the name Loys Solleri and became a master of the Guild of St. Luke in 1602. The assumption that he ever traveled to Italy has not been confirmed. On the other hand, his architectural works show the influence of Paul Vredeman de Vries (c. 1567-c. 1635), especially his architectural studies. Only two of his works are fully signed: a Venetian carnival scene (Kunsthalle Hamburg) and "Fete galante" (Musée des Beaux Arts, Cambrai). An "Allegory of the Senses", dated 1618, is monogrammed with "L.C." (Lobkowicz Collection, Nelahozeves Castle, Bohemia). Provenance: Aristocratic family from the Bourbonnais. (1391491) (13) Louis de Caullery, ca. 1580 Cambrai - ca. 1621 Antwerp, and workshop CRUCIFIXION Oil on panel. Parquetted. 56.5 x 94 cm. Provenance: Aristocratic family from Bourbonnais.
