JOHN THE BAPTIST Oil on canvas. Doubled. 76 x 62 cm. In decorative frame. Accompanied by an attribution by Prof. Leonard J. Slatkes, New York, December 21, 1997 and an expertise by Gianni Papi, Florence, April 10, 2017, both copies. Half-length portrait of the saint, with his upper body half exposed, covered by a fur and a red cloth. His head is framed by a golden circular halo. With both hands he holds a white lamb as an attribute animal, which, like the saint himself, makes eye contact with the viewer, which must be seen as extremely rare iconographically. Behind him on the left is the cross staff of the saint, this with a rotulus, inscribed "MAGNUS" in capital letters. The figure in front of a dark background with illuminated incarnation. The painting as a whole has a suggestive effect. (1380312) (18) Jan Janssens, 1590 Siegen - ca. 1655 Antwerp, attributed SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST Oil on canvas. Relined. 76 x 62 cm. Attribution courtesy of Professor Leonard J. Slatkes, New York, 21 December 1997. Further an expert's report by Gianni Papi, Florence, dated 10 April 2017; each in copy.
