Cesare Fracanzano, um 1605 Bisceglie/ Bari – 1651 Barletta

ST. PETER AS A PENITENT Oil on canvas. 84 x 84 cm. In profile frame. We would like to thank Nicola Spinosa, who confirmed the authorship of the painting in 2021 according to the consignor. In front of an indeterminate background, Peter immersed in prayer with folded hands and an upturned, tear-filled gaze. On the left edge on the stone slab the key attributed to him. A composition of the same subject by Cesare Fracanzano with an ascending diagonal was offered in these rooms on December 5, 2019 under lot 443. Cesare was the son of Alessandro Fracanzano, a bourgeois from upper-class circles who also worked as a painter, as did his brother Francesco Fracanzano (1612-circa 1656). Provenance: In aristocratic possession since at least the beginning of the 19th century.
