Description

Norditaliensischer Meister des 16./17. Jahrhunderts

VENUS AND AMOR Oil on canvas. Doubled. 119 x 109 cm. In gilded frame with shell decoration. Dressed only in a red loincloth, Venus is depicted seated in a landscape in a kneeling position, with Cupid turning his back to the viewer and kneeling on her lap. Both are looking towards the viewer, their faces close together, and Cupid appears to be about to thrust an arrow into Venus' heart. Her free hand is holding his quiver with a bow and more arrows. The particularly seductive aspect of the motif therefore seems to be that Venus is about to fall in love with the male viewer addressed here, forced by the arrow that Cupid is about to thrust into her heart. This is entirely in the style of the Venetian school of the 16th century, both in terms of the composition of the figures brought close to the viewer and the type of woman, which Paris Bordone (1500 - 1571) also used in his paintings. Works by the artist can be found in the most important public collections in Italy, France and Austria, among others. (14007619) (10) North Italian master of the 16th/17th century VENUS AND CUPID Oil on canvas. Relined. 119 x 109 cm.
