ANTONIUS AND CLEOPATRA Oil on canvas. Doubled. 120 x 90 cm. In an à jour bronzed frame with polished mirror trimming. Against a dark background the depiction of the figures, a young lady with pearl jewelry, probably identifiable as Cleopatra, with a bearded man visible behind her, pointing in one direction. In front of her is a servant figure bringing in further jewels. The painter was a pupil of Antonio Balestra (1666-1740) and devoted himself mainly to religious motifs, with a few exceptions. According to tradition, Emperor Joseph II is said to have called this artist the first painter in Europe after his visit to Verona.
