Paolo Veronese, eigentlich "Paolo Caliari", 1528 Verona – 1588 Venedig, zugeschrieben

ST. NICOLAS IS RECEIVED BY THE CLERGY OF MYRA Oil on canvas. Doubled. 59 x 96 cm. Unframed. Accompanied by a copy of an expert opinion by Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Maria Pilo, Udine. In his detailed expert opinion, Pilo comes to the conclusion that the present painting is a work by Paolo Veronese. Horizontally spreading quatrefoil cartouche. It depicts an architectural portico with twisted Baroque columns on the right and a canopy with gold braid and brocade pattern carried on poles on the left. Between them is St. Nicholas with churchmen. The composition of the present painting is based on a tondo depicting the same subject, which is kept in the Galleria della Accademia in Venice (diameter 198 cm, inv. no. 661). Veronese is considered one of the most important masters of the late Renaissance and Venetian painting. He was called to Venice in 1553 to decorate three halls in the Doge's Palace together with other artists; from 1556 to 1557, he and others created three ceiling paintings for the Biblioteca Marciana, for which he is said to have received a prize from Titian. In addition to portraits, he painted mythological pictures, often with an erotic touch, in particular several depictions of Venus and Mars. He died of pneumonia in 1588. Annotation: A painting in the same fit is kept in the Galleria della Accademia in Venice under inv. no. 975. It was previously in the Chiesa di S. Nicolò della Lattuga in Venice and shows St. Francis receiving the stigmata. Literature: Cf. Remigio Marini, L'opera completa del Veronese, Milan 1968, p. 127.(1400732) (13)
