Pair of paintings THE BIRTH OF CHRIST and THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT Oil on wood. 68 x 21 cm. Frame with red velvet inlays. The two slender, tall-format panel paintings, closed at the top with a round arch, probably originate from a multi-part altarpiece context. The round-arched finial is often found in the art room at this time. The elongated format allows for further narratives in the upper part in addition to the main scene at the bottom. The nocturnal depiction of a burning building above the adoration scene is enigmatic, with Joseph holding a candle next to it.
