RESURRECTION OF CHRIST Oil on wood. 109 x 69 cm. Circa 1550. This panel painting was probably created for the altar of a castle chapel or the side altar of a church. The painter has depicted the scene mentioned in the New Testament very vividly and full of figures, in stark contrast to the usual depictions of this motif by other masters. The risen Christ from the tomb appears at the top of the round-arched picture field in front of a red velum, held by putti. In addition, the figure of Christ is surrounded by a cloud cover. Closer inspection reveals that most of the guards and their accompanying figures do not actually see the Risen Christ. In addition, the sarcophagus is shown closed. The painter therefore does not understand the resurrection in a material sense. This observation is confirmed all the more when we see that the guards who see the Risen Christ are depicted standing, while those who do not recognize the miracle are shown lying on the ground. There is undoubtedly a theological statement here, which gives the work additional meaning. (1360981) (10) Old Netherlandish master THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST Oil on panel. 109 x 69 cm. Ca. 1550.
