LUCREZIA Oil on wood. Parquetry. 70 x 56 cm. Unframed. This painting depicts the intended suicide of Lucrezia after she was raped by Sixtus, the son of the King of Rome Tarquinius Superbus. Against a dark background is a half-length portrait of the young woman in elegant clothing with a white blouse and red and green robe, which she has opened at the top to make it easier to place the dagger in her right hand on her breast. She has long, slightly wavy dark blonde hair, delicate incarnation and flushed cheeks, and her large dark eyes look determined to carry out her suicide. Annotation: This tragic and emotionally charged episode was frequently depicted by Italian and Dutch painters of the 16th and 17th centuries in particular. (1401801) (3) (13)
