Florentinische Schule des 16. Jahrhunderts

MADONNA WITH CHILD Oil on poplar wood. 78 x 64 cm. Unframed, attached with strips on verso. Accompanied by an official export certificate from the Direction Génerale des Beaux-Arts et des Lettres, Brussels, February 25, 1949. Panel painting, probably of a devotional altarpiece. Mary depicted with accentuated youthful, graceful features, a white veil over her golden-brown hair, which drapes down to her chest. A dark band with pseudo-Hebrew letters on the hem of the red dress. The golden cloak clasp with pearls shows a winged angel's head. The gaze is pensive, Mary in front of a gold brocade cloth, with a landscape of slender cypress trees to the side. The child is holding a cross staff, which is to be given to the boy John, who is no longer visible in the picture. The depiction is reduced by the beveled corners. The painting style shows the school of Florence, in which masters such as Filippino Lippi (1406-1469) had already shaped the type of graceful women.
