CROWNING OF MARY Tempera and gold leaf on wood. Parquetry. 66.5 x 45.5 cm. Gold ground panel painting depicting the coronation of Mary by Jesus. The two figures enthroned side by side above a staircase, Mary's head slightly bowed, receiving the crown. In a departure from the usual color iconography, Mary is wearing a white cloak as a sign of her virginity. The background of the main figures is a stylized, decorative wall painting in red. Four angels kneel in adoration at the base of the stairs. Gilt nimbuses and upper edge sections, Gothic foliage in the upper corners in punched and painted technique. (1400896) (11)
