Description

Joseph Vernet, 1714 Avignon – 1789 Paris Pair of paintingsCASTAL SCENES WITH FIGURES Oil on canvas. Doubled. Each 101.5 x 91.5 cm. Framed. Accompanied by an expertise by Nicola Spinosa, Naples. One painting shows in the foreground fishermen returning from a catch, spreading their nets on the rocks of a bay and examining the fish. On the water is a large flagged rowing boat, and on the left is the coastline with a castle and another in the distance on a high rock. On the right, as a repoussoir, a high rock and a three-master on the calm water against a high sky in the warm, yellow-golden shimmering romantic light of the setting sun. The other painting shows a large, flagged three-master near the rocky shore, which has been tilted by the storm and whose crew is trying to reach the shore safely in a rowing boat despite the strong waves. In the lower left corner, four figures on a piece of rock, including a standing woman who is following the dramatic events with her arms raised. In the background on the right at the edge of the shore is a large lighthouse and a church further inland. Depicted under a high sky with thick, dense gray clouds, which, however, are already clearing at the left edge and the first yellowish, translucent sunlight hopefully points to the storm's retreat. High-quality depictions by the famous artist. Note: Vernet created a series of pictures of such scenes, which were often repeated due to their popularity. His depiction of the golden sunset light in particular influenced a number of his successors in France in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
