Description

Bernardo Bellotto, genannt „Canaletto“, 1721 Venedig – 1780 Warschau

MARKUSPLATZ WITH THE BASILICA AND THE BELL TOWER Oil on canvas. 66 x 104.8 cm In a golden frame. Accompanied by an expertise by Dario Succi, 2022, in copy. The view of the piazza is from the right corner, where the shadow sharply delimits the painting, making the left side, bathed in an intense light, appear wider. The architecture is painted with great technique and virtuosity; all the arches and details are defined with skilful brushstrokes, and the clear spaces are enlivened by the numerous graceful figures that populate them, as well as by the curtains, which give vibrancy to the composition through their play of colors and shapes, sometimes straight, sometimes oblique. The basilica is imposing, the play of light highlights the gold of the decorations and skillfully accentuates the chiaroscuro of the arches and the shadow reflections of the sculptures and columns. In the foreground, an elegantly depicted crowd of people transports the viewer to everyday life in the square at the time.
