Description

Michele Marieschi, 1710 Venedig – 1744

VENICE - RIALTO BRIDGE WITH THE PALAZZO CAMERLENGHI Oil on canvas. 63 x 99 cm. Framed. Accompanied by an expertise by Dario Succi, Gorizia. This veduta demonstrates the high quality of the painter's work, despite the fact that its attribution has not yet been fully confirmed. This is not only due to the painterly lighting and the detailed rendering of the buildings, but also to the lively depiction of the figural staffage with gondolas, barges such as a boat loaded with barrels of wine, the ships with reefed sails, as well as lifelike observations such as the ladder on the chimney of the building on the left or the awning there. The view is directed towards the course of the canal and offers a glimpse under the arch of the bridge to the sunlit buildings behind it. A typical feature of the painter's working method is the exactness of the depiction of the architecture, but also the painterly effect of the striking red clothing of the gondolier in the foreground. In another work, Marieschi used this color effect in the tarpaulin of a gondola (Dorotheum, May 2023, lot 140). Marieschi was a pupil of his father, occasionally spent time in Germany as a theater painter, but returned to Venice in 1735 and was accepted into the Fraglia de'Pittori painters' guild. One of his patrons was the collector and Field Marshal Baron von der Schulenburg, who purchased two paintings from him. Depictions of his views of Venice can be found in the engraved work that Marieschi published in 1741 under the title "Magnificentiores Selectionesque Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus". Michele Marieschi was only granted a short life and creative period. It is assumed that he received his apprenticeship in the workshop of his father, an architectural painter and wood engraver. He probably worked as a theater painter in Germany at the end of the 1720s or after 1731 before returning to Venice in 1735, where he became a member of the Fraglia de'Pittori painters' guild between 1735 and 1741. He was supported by Gaspare Diziani (1689-1767). It is known that the art lover Baron von der Schulenburg, Field Marshal General in the service of the Republic of Venice, purchased two vedute from the artist in 1738. In 1741, he produced a series of 21 etchings. Works by his hand can be found in several public collections, such as in Prague, Warsaw, Stockholm, Milan and Hanover. Literature: Cf.
