Monsù Desiderio, eigentlich "François de Nomé", um 1593 Metz – nach 1644 Neapel

MARKUSPLATZ Oil on canvas. 54.2 x 107.2 cm. Framed. St. Mark's Square opens up into a panorama with sharp contours. Gondolas float on the water. Clouds gather in the gray sky, while from the left, literally out of nowhere, light falls onto the square and illuminates the lower part of the marble-clad Campanile. The Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica and the lower part of the clock tower are also strongly illuminated, while the Biblioteca Marciana casts a large shadow over the scene. In the scene, the square is the scene of many different activities. After surviving several plague epidemics, the citizens want to take to the streets again. A large number of elegantly dressed figures move across the square while exuberant music plays from the footbridge. A circle of spectators has formed around a dancing acrobat. Provenance: J.H.C.
