Description

Pompeo Girolamo Batoni, 1708 Lucca – 1787 Rom

REPRESENTATIVE PORTRAIT OF CLEMENS XIII Oil on canvas. Doubled. 135 x 98 cm. Inscribed, signed and dated "1760" on the document. In gilded frame. Three-quarter portrait of the standing Pope Clemens XIII (Carlo della Torre Rezzonico (1763-1769), who held the office of Pope from 1758-1769, turned slightly to the right. He did much to promote the establishment of German, French and English artists' colonies in Rome and appointed Winckelmann Commissario delle Antichità. To his right is a table covered in red, above which his hand holds a document as if floating. Behind it is a richly carved and gilded throne chair upholstered in red velvet. A portrait by Batoni depicting Clement XIII is kept in the Palazzo Barberini in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Rome (inv. no. 1925). The latter is signed, dated and inscribed "Alla Santita di Nro Sig.re / Clemente Papa XIIII / Per / Pompeo Batoni che pinse / L'anno. 1760". Other versions are known in the Weyer Collection in Cologne, Palazzo Ranghiasci Brancaleoni in Gubbi in the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie in Kassel, in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, in a private collection in Rome, in Wardour Castle in Wiltshire and in particularly good quality and in signed condition in the Roman art trade. Annotation: Pompeo Girolamo Batoni was an extremely popular portraitist and en vogue among his contemporaries. Wealthy tourists visiting the Eternal City were particularly keen to have their portraits painted by him, making him the inventor of the tourist portrait. Throughout his career, he was considered on a par with Anton Raphael Mengs. Literature: Cf. Luigi Cajani, Anna Foa, Clemente XIII, in: Massimo Bray (ed.), Enciclopedia dei Papi. vol., Rome 2000. Cf.
