ITALIANIZING FOREST LANDSCAPE WITH HUNTERS Oil on canvas. Doubled. 132.5 x 150.5 cm. In gilt frame. On the left side of a river, over which a bridge and a mountain landscape as well as a town can be seen in the distance, a large wooded landscape with tall, white branching trees in autumn leaves, some of which are slightly brownish in color. Inside the forest, some hunters with two horses and their dogs, who have already shot a deer. In the foreground, a hunter in a red jacket, accompanied by a dog, while another is firing a shot at an animal swimming in the river water. On the right is a high rock formation from which two waterfalls spring, leading to the river. The painting is further enlivened by several plants and flowers in blue, yellow and red at the front edge. Fine painting in the artist's typical manner. The artist was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who specialized in landscapes. He probably learned to paint from his father, the painter Abraham van der Haagen (1587-1639). When his father died, he moved to The Hague in 1639, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke in 1643.
