Description

Louis de Caullery, um 1580 Cambrai – um 1621 Antwerpen, zugeschrieben CARRYING CHRIST ON THE CROSS WITH SAINT VERONICA Oil on copper. 44 x 61 cm. Stamp marks of the plate maker Pieter Stas, Antwerp, on the reverse, as well as a stamp with the sign "Hand" and the date 1607. Like the majority of the painter's works, this work also depicts an immense crowd of people, which here shows Jesus kneeling on the ground under the weight of the cross in the center of the picture. His gaze is directed at Veronica, who is holding out the sweatcloth to him, with a child in striking yellow clothing at her feet, thus drawing the painter's attention to this center. A boy at the lower edge of the picture looks towards the viewer and also points excitedly to the main event. The harnessed horseman on a white horse also supports this direction of vision. The crowd moves from the right to the back left, towards the hill of Calvary, with the two thieves in between, driven by Roman henchmen. In the background, Jerusalem appears in the hollow of a valley, with a dome, as was mistakenly assumed for the temple from the Middle Ages until modern times. The painter, whose name can probably be traced back to the city of his birth, devoted himself to the theme of the crucifixion on several occasions. As in almost all of his other works, he always presented a rich staffage of figures. His style shows the tradition of Flemish landscape painting, for example by Lucas of Valckenborch, Abel Grimmer or Joos de Momper. A.R. The painter assumed here was a pupil of Joos de Momper the Younger (1564-1635) and became Master of the Guild of St. Luke in 1602, succeeding Paul Vriedeman de Vries (c. 1567-c. 1635). (1402322) (11) Louis de Caullery, ca. 1580 Cambrai - ca. 1621 Antwerp, attributed THE BEARING OF THE CROSS WITH SAINT VERONICA Oil on copper. 44 x 61 cm. Embossing by copper plate maker Pieter Stas, Antwerp on the reverse and embossing with "hand" mark and date "1607".
