TRIUMPHAL PROCESSION OF BACCHUS Oil on canvas. Doubled. 175 x 240 cm. In frame in relief with pearl band. This large-format painting, composed vertically from two canvases, takes up a pictorial idea by Rubens. The theme, which Ovid treats in his Metamorphoses (Book III: 528), was also taken up by Cornelis de Vos, among others, by whom a painting with the same depiction and similar dimensions is registered in the RKD in The Hague under no. 247778 and is kept in the Prado in Madrid. Besch. De Vos became freemaster of the Antwerp guild in 1608. His achievement lies less in the search for a new stylistic language than in bringing the traditional school of masters to a heightened climax. His work shows that, in addition to mythological and religious themes, his portraits were his greatest achievement. He often surpassed the greatest masters of his time in terms of fine painting and the rendering of materials. In addition, his sensitivity for psychologically capturing the character of his sitters was always recognized.(1401538) (13) Cornelis de Vos, ca. 1585 Hulst - 1651 Antwerp, attributed THE TRIUMPHAL PROCESSION OF BACCHUS Oil on canvas. Relined. 175 x 240 cm.
