Description
Gioacchino Assereto, 1600 Genua – 1649 ebenda PORTRAIT OF A PROPHET Oil on canvas. Doubled. 93 x 75 cm. In wide, ornamentally decorated frame. Accompanied by a copy of an expertise by Anna Orlando, Genoa, July 2017. Half-length portrait of an old man leaning against a tabletop, facing to the right with his arms crossed and his gaze turned upwards. In the center is the man's puffy white beard, who is commonly identified as a prophet. Orlando compares the depiction offered here with a Saint Mark in the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. The painter Assereto emerged from the school of Luciano Borzone and was a successor to Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo; he was soon active throughout the Ligurian region. Initially committed to the style of G. C. Procaccini, he turned more towards the Lombard school from around 1618. His work combines naturalistic Caravaggism with the painting style of Bernardo Strozzi, as can be seen in his Descent from the Cross, which can be seen in the Palazzo Bianco in Genoa. Literature: Cf. Anna Orlando, Dipinto genovesi dal Cinquecento al Settecento. Ritrovamenti dal collezionismo privato, Turin 2010, pp. 20f. (1401252) (13) Gioacchino Assereto, 1600 Genoa - 1649 ibid. PORTRAIT OF A PROPHET Oil on canvas. Relined. 93 x 75 cm. Accompanied by expert's report by Anna Orlando, Genoa, July 2017, in copy. Literature: cf. Anna Orlando, Dipinto genovesi dal Cinquecento al Settecento. Ritrovamenti dal collezionismo privato, Turin 2010, pp. 20. (†)
