THE HOLY FAMILY AS A DONOR PAINTING Oil on wood. Parquetted. 86 x 62 cm. Verso with old label referring to Lucas Cranach. In red frame with waterstruck molding. In a varied landscape with a central tree and a mountain range ending at the back in front of a castle built on an island, the Holy Mother of God sits slightly to the right of the center holding the Christ Child with golden wavy hair and a radiant nimbus. To her left is Joseph in a red robe leading a donkey, with putti on all sides, some of them feasting on the water of a fountain. In front left, Dominican monks, who are probably the donors of this altar wing. The island could refer to the Dominican island in Lake Constance, which was given to the Dominicans in 1220.
