Pseudo Ambrogio di Baldese, 1352 Florenz – 1429 ebenda, zugeschrieben

Tuscan master of the late 14th century. DEPICTION OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, CRUCIFIXION SCENE AND SAINTS Tempera on panel with gold ground. 67.3 x 39.5 cm Accompanied by an expertise by Amedeo Morandotti and Giuliano Briganti, in copy. The painting, a panel painted in tempera on a gold ground, closed at the top in a pointed arch, shows the Virgin Mary enthroned in the center with the infant Jesus in her arms, her right hand raised in blessing. Two saints stand at her side. The crucified Christ is depicted in the middle of the pointed arch, with blood running from his wounds to the lower end of the cross. On the left is Mary and on the other John, each with nimbuses. Annotation: There is little certain information about this painter, whom critics have recently identified with Lippo d'Andrea, a painter documented in Tuscany who, together with Niccolò Gerini, was involved in the decoration of the façade of Francesco Datini's Palazzo del Ceppo in Prato in 1411. Archival documents attribute several works from 1424 for the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence to him.
