Pierre Puget, 1620 Marseille – 1694, nach

SALVATOR MUNDI Height: 36 cm. White marble. The artist worked in all genres of the fine arts, as a painter, architect and above all as a well-known sculptor of the French Baroque. He went to Rome at the age of 20. There he was involved in the painting of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence before later turning to sculpture, noticeably under the influence of Bernini. His importance also lies in sculpture. His works can be found in the Louvre as well as in Marseille. His "Milon of Cronton" in the Louvre, his atlantes in Toulon and the park figures in Versailles became famous. The bust of Christ already betrays a calming of the Baroque sculpture, probably also necessitated by the timeless seriousness of the subject. The bust shows long hair flowing down to the shoulders in curls, the head tilted, the gaze turned inwards. Further examples in the Musée des Beaux-arts Marseilles and in the Brooklyn Museum Archives, Goodyear Archival Collection.
