MADONNA WITH CHILD Height: 69.5 cm. Probably around 1360. Impressive group of figures in alabaster worked three-quarters round, cursorily worked robe on the back. Standing figure of Mary holding the infant Jesus with her left hand and tenderly touching his hand with her right. The gaze of the completely oval face, which is lined with parallel strands, wanders into the distance and serves as a symbol for the Passion of Christ, which Mary seems to be anticipating. The naturalistic coloration of the alabaster material contrasts attractively with the delicate gold ornamentation and the red trim on the robe. In terms of composition, style and execution, this Madonna has many similarities with the sculpture created by the so-called Master of Monte San Giusto in the Marche for the church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Telusiano. Minimal rest, dam. Literature: Cf. Pietro Zampetti, Scultura nelle Marche. Dalle origini all'età contemporanea, Florence 1993, pp. 213, 236-237, ill. 33.
