Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras (Celaya, Mexico 1759 - 1833)

Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras (Celaya, Mexico 1759 - 1833) "Holy Pilgrim" Oil on copper. Signed with an anagram and dated 1812. 41 x 30,5 cm. Architect, painter and engraver. As Luis Javier Cuesta Hernández notes in the Real academia de la Historia Tresguerras "He was one of the most important artists of the transition between the 18th and 19th centuries, and formulator of a peculiar language halfway between a classicist baroque and a neoclassical avant la lettre... In the city of Celaya he practised various artistic activities (including at least painting, music and engraving). Despite this, his main activity was always architectural, and we know that as early as 1794 he had already requested a licence from the San Carlos Academy to carry out this activity... His pictorial work (paintings, drawings and engravings) is less well known than his architectural work. And today, despite careful studies, many of his attributions remain uncertain. Despite this, some artworks (the drawing of the Fountain of Neptune in Querétaro, for example) are of extraordinary quality."
