Novohispanic School. Mexico. 18th century. "Saint Joseph with Child" Oil on canvas. 63 x 57 cm. The cult of St. Joseph enjoyed great devotion from the sixteenth century, becoming one of the most artistically represented, as patron saint of workers and patriarch of the church. As in this case, the painters of the 18th century show us a young St. Joseph, not an old man as one would expect, with a gentle expression and showing his paternal love. Particularly in New Spain, great fervour was shown to him, and he was considered a protector, especially after 1732, when he was named patron saint of Mexico City.
