Jacopo Chimenti (Empoli, 1551-1640), attr.

Jacopo Chimenti (EMPOLI 1551-1640), attr. Allegory of Ingenuity, with frame. Oil on canvas. cm180x136. It would not be wrong to recognize in the painting under consideration a portrait of a member of a Florentine family, with fine clothing, in the allegorical guise of Ingenuity. The style in which it is painted is still affected by the "reform" of Santi di Tito although it already shows that purism so dear to Medici policy that would find in Jacopo Chimenti (1551-1640) a valid representative. Like Santi di Tito he too was a valid portrait painter and although he was a strict adherent of post-Tridentine artistic rules there is no lack of allegorical compositions in his production, such as the four examples in the Musée Fesch in Ajaccio. These share with the examined painting the same attention to the details of the robes, the landscape still depicted in bird's-eye view with greenish-silvery tones, and the presence of explanatory cartouches at the bottom. The depiction of Ingegno is particularly rare in painting, and it is recalled, again in the Florentine sphere, a different drafting at the iconographic level belonging to Francesco Bianchi Buonavita (1593-1658) and preserved in the Museo di Casa Buonarroti.
