Géza Vörös, Francis of Assisi preaching to the birds Depiction of St Francis of Assisi (1181/82 to 1226), preaching to birds under a tree on the lakeshore, the "Chronica maiora" by Matthew of Paris already reports the event in the 13th century as follows "... But the Roman people, who were hostile to everything good, despised the preaching of this man of God so much that they did not listen to him or even attend his holy exhortations. Finally, after they had refused to accept his preaching for many days, Francis severely rebuked their hardness of heart: "I am greatly grieved," he said, "at your unhappy situation, for you not only spurn me, the servant of Christ, but also despise him in me, since I proclaim to you the Good News of the Saviour of the world. Therefore I now leave Rome, and in your desolation I invoke the testimony of him who is the faithful witness in heaven; and to your shame I will proclaim the Good News of Christ to the wild beasts and the birds of the air, that they may hear the healing words of God, obey them and find peace." ...", colourful, stylised contour painting, oil on canvas, signed "vörösgéza" in ligature in Hungarian at lower right, old fragmentary Hungarian label of the "Nemzeti Szalon Budapest [National Salon Budapest]" on the reverse with partly illegible handwritten additions "...
