Wilhelm Busch (1832 Wiedensahl - 1908 Mechtshausen) "Farmer with a barrel". Original title Interior with a so-called "red jacket" - a farmer in a red jacket - painted in a fluid, quick style. Typical motif and style, probably created around 1890-1892, small cabinet painting by the draughtsman, poet and painter who became particularly famous for his picture stories. Busch studied at the academies in Düsseldorf, Antwerp and Munich from 1851, where he joined the "Jung-München" artists' association. His encounter with 17th-century Dutch painting in Antwerp - especially with Adriaen Brouwer - had a formative influence on his painterly oeuvre. The "redcoat pictures" inspired by this are a focal point, forming the motif in more than a quarter of his paintings. Oil/paper (or thin card), mounted on thicker card. Mounted adhesive label on verso with confirmation of authenticity "I hereby confirm that the painting 'Bauer mit Faß' overleaf was painted by Wilhelm Busch and has been in my possession since his death. Verden, 3.10.(19)23 Mrs. L. Nöldeke". 13.5 cm x 8.2 cm. Frame. Listed in the inventory of Hans Georg Gmelin, no. 373. Provenance: Elisabeth Nöldeke née Koch (1871 - 1952), wife of Busch's nephew Adolf Nöldeke (1865 - 1919), Verden (1923); Galerie J. H. Bauer, Hanover; German private collection, Münster. Oil on paper (or thin cardboard), laid down on cardboard. On the reverse a label with certificate of authenticity by the wife of the artist's nephew Elisabeth Nöldeke, dated 1923. Mentioned in the catalogue raisonné (Gmelin no. 373).
