BILLET : 10 CENTS from the American Bank Note Con "receivable for all United states stamps", issued March 3, 1863, with effigy of Liberty (bust of young woman with headdress) - VG note: bills created at the start of the American Civil War (secession war of the Southern states) to enable commerce to function, as people hid circulation coins for the value of the metal they contained. The public used stamps to replace them, so the government issued these small-value bills.
