MESSAGERIES MARITIMES 1931 - Large medal of the PAQUEBOT GEORGES PHILIPPAR (*) - bronze - 68 mm - Arthus Bertrand manufacture - 151 gr - high relief bust in profile to the left - reverse: ship at sea, port profile; date in exergue (*) - Ship: Georges PHILIPPAR - launched on November 6, 1930 at St Nazaire, assigned to passenger transport on the Far East line, she caught fire on the night of May 16 to 17, 1932, then sank off Aden on the return leg of her maiden voyage to Japan and China, taking 49 lives, including the journalist Albert Londres. - Man: Georges PHILIPPAR was the acting president of the Compagnie Maritime at the time of the ship's launch. In the merchant navy, it is customary to name a ship while the person is still alive, unlike in the French navy.
